How to Apply for Your First U.S. Passport
If you have never had a U.S. passport before, you will need to apply in person. The process is straightforward when you follow these steps.
Step 1: Complete the passport application form
You will need to complete Form DS-11, the application for a new U.S. passport.
Fill out the form online using the U.S. Department of State form filler, then print it.
Important: Do not sign the form yet. You will sign it later when you submit your application in person.
Step 2: Gather proof of U.S. citizenship
You must provide one of the following original documents as proof of citizenship:
- Certified U.S. birth certificate
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Certificate of Citizenship
You will also need to bring a photocopy of this document.
Step 3: Bring a valid photo ID
You must show a valid government-issued photo ID, such as:
Driver’s license
State ID card
Military ID
Government employee ID
You must submit one passport photo with your application.
Many places offer passport photo services, including CVS, Walgreens, UPS Store locations, some post offices, and local photo studios.
These businesses know the correct passport photo requirements and will usually take the photo and print it for you on the spot.
If you choose to take the photo yourself, it must meet the official passport photo rules, including:
Taken within the last 6 months

Step 5: Apply in person at a passport acceptance facility
First-time passport applications must be submitted in person at an official passport acceptance facility.

Many locations require an appointment.
When you go to your appointment, bring your completed DS-11 form, proof of citizenship, a photocopy of your citizenship document, valid photo ID, a photocopy of your ID, your passport photo, and payment for the required fees.
Step 6: Pay the passport fees
When applying in person for a new passport book, you will pay two separate fees:
The passport application fee paid to the U.S. Department of State The execution fee paid to the acceptance facility
If you need your passport faster, you can request expedited processing for an additional fee.
Step 7: Track processing time
Passport processing times change throughout the year. Before applying, check the current processing times on the official State Department website.
Keep in mind that mailing time can add up to two extra weeks to the overall timeline.
Step 8: Check your application status
After you submit your application, you can track the status of your passport online.
